SUST's 2 Student Got Medal in International Math Competition

Two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have won gold and silver medals in the 'International Youth Math Challenge-2021' organized by the International Youth Math Challenge. They are, student of the 2019-20 session of the mathematics department of the university, named Abu Naser Shah Mohammad Maruf Ahmed and Mahbub Ahmed Chowdhury.

In the final round of the competition, Abu Naser got the gold medal by getting 19 out of 20 points. He has been selected as one of the top 52 people in the world. On the other hand, Mahbub Ahmed Chowdhury got the silver medal with 15 points. The students who received the medal were supervised by SM Saidur Rahman, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, SUST.

The International Youth Math Challenge (IYMC) organizes such an international math challenge every year. More than 5,200 students from 98 countries took part in this year's Math Challenge. More than 13 hundred teachers were in charge of the examinations. The international organization has published the list of students who have passed the final round of IYMC-2021 competition.

The competition is held in three stages. The first qualification round was held. Those who pass will participate in the pre-finals with a 8 Euro registration fee. Those who advance to the pre-finals later take part in the final round. A total of 1,300 students passed the final round of the competition. Among them, two students of SUST passed. In the final round, 20 point test was held in 20 questions. Gold-Silver-Bronze medals are awarded on the basis of points earned from this test. The final examination was supervised by a university teacher.

Abu Naser Shah received a gold medal. Expressing his feelings, Maruf Ahmed said, “I am very happy to have won a gold medal in the competition. I had to suffer a lot to get so far. I won a silver medal by participating in this competition last year.”

Silver medalist Mahbub Ahmed Chowdhury said, “Unfortunately, after participating in this competition last year, I could not contribute anything as I submitted questions after the deadline. I have been able to overcome a lot of hardships by getting a silver medal this year.”
