Data Science department Launched in BD । Introduction to BD's BSc in Data Science Degree


A new era in the history of data science in Bangladesh.

Ismail Hossain Shohel: Data science has emerged as an important topic globally. We can't think about a day in the life without data science's involvement. It is also essential for the transformation of Smart Bangladesh. Meanwhile, United International University's (UIU) Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) got approval of the country's first undergraduate course in data science. Through this data science course, a new horizon has been started in the construction of the smart Bangladesh of the future.

Classes for the newly approved program will begin in the fall semester of 2023. The department intends to work closely with industry and government. Those who concerned with these said that they want to play a key role in the national progress towards the fourth industrial revolution. 

UIU Vice-Chancellor (Acting) Prof. Abul Kashem Mia said, ‘The challenges of the future is to make the graduates proficient in computing and data analysis. This expertise will help in this initiative towards building Smart Bangladesh. We believe that the graduates of this newly accredited program will play a vital role in this process.’

According to UIU sources, the CSE department of the university has already installed high-powered GPU-based computing facilities, which are required to run the program successfully, along with regular laboratories and other facilities. The curriculum has been developed with inputs from national and international academic and industry experts in relevant fields. It also designed with the knowledge of introduction to data science, data science projects, data science skills etc.

United International University sources said that the teachers of the CSE department here are the best in the country in their field of work. They have institutional degrees and experience especially in areas like Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics. Not only that, each of them has experience and expertise working in areas such as bioinformatics, genomics, medical science, agriculture, epidemiology, finance, social media analytics, natural language processing, satellite imaging, remote sensing, health information and marketing.

Professor Salekul Islam, Head of Computer Science and Engineering Department of UIU said, ‘Data science will be the most demanding subject in the near future and numerous job opportunities will be created in the country and abroad. CSE department of UIU has taken timely decision. We are confident of producing the best graduates and they will lead our country in various fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning.’
